Adopt an Author
Support the Library. Read What You Love.
Are you a fan of a particular author or book series? Do you look forward to new releases and enjoy being among the first to read them? The Adopt an Author program may be a perfect fit for you. This program allows book lovers to support the Mattoon Public Library by purchasing new books for the collection—while enjoying early access to the titles they love.
How Adopt an Author Works
What Happens When You Adopt
When you adopt an author or series:
- The library purchases and processes the book
- When the book is ready, you are notified first
- You check out the book before it goes into general circulation
You get to enjoy your next read while helping build the library’s collection.
Adopter Benefits
As an Adopt an Author participant, you receive:
- Preferred checkout of your adopted author’s newest book or series
- The library’s discounted purchase price (typically 35–43% off cover price)
- No late fees on adopted books
- Updates on new book releases
- A name plaque inside the front of the book, recognizing your support
- A tax-deductible contribution
Flexible & Personalized
The program is tailored to your interests.
- Adopt a specific author or a single series
- Choose adult, young adult, or children’s literature
- Gift an adoption in someone else’s name
For example, if you love Janet Evanovich but only her Stephanie Plum series, the library can adopt just that series for you.
Author & Series Selection
Almost any current author from major publishers can be adopted.
- The library maintains a suggestion list of more than 650 authors and series
- Patrons may also request authors or series not currently on the list
