About the Friends
The Friends of the Mattoon Public Library began in 1989 as an educational and literary not-for-profit organization. The Friends are a group of individuals who believe the Mattoon Public Library is a valuable community resource.
They support the library by helping advance its mission to provide a welcoming destination that cultivates lifelong learning and serves as a leader in civic collaboration. Today, the Friends continue to raise funds and support the library through advocacy, fundraising, and community involvement.
What the Friends Do
Friends of the Mattoon Public Library support the library in a variety of ways, including:
- Assisting library staff with their Annual Fundraiser
- Promoting the joy of reading through book reviews and community activities
- Gathering to learn about new library projects and provide feedback
- Supporting special programs, services, and improvements
Membership & Annual Dues
Membership is open to everyone.

Join the Friends
There are two ways to be involved as a Friend of the Library:
Contributing Members
Contributing Members pay annual membership dues to support the library and help fund additional resources, programs, and events.
Committee Members
Committee Members serve as officers or volunteers on committees and assist with Friends-led projects and activities.
If you are interested in becoming a Committee Member, please note this on the sign-up form. Your support as a Friend helps develop new services, expand cultural and educational activities, and strengthen the library for the community.
