Community Service

We Welcome Community Service Workers

The Mattoon Public Library welcomes community service workers age 13 and older. Younger children may participate through group project days organized by schools, organizations, or other groups.

Community service at the library can be completed for:

  • Housing requirements
  • School obligations
  • Organizational groups (churches, social groups, etc.)
  • Court-ordered service

Types of Tasks

Community service assignments vary depending on the reason for service:

Routine Tasks

(Housing, School, Organizational):

  • Assisting with library programs
  • Cleaning DVDs and other materials
  • Cutting or preparing materials
  • Helping organize events

Court-Ordered Service:

Court-ordered service may involve more physically demanding tasks such as:

  • Dusting
  • Sweeping outside areas
  • Shoveling snow

Restrictions:

The library cannot accept court-ordered community service for individuals with convictions related to:

  • Sexual assault or predation
  • Violent crimes
  • Grand theft

The Library Director reserves the right to refuse any court-ordered service worker.

Logging Your Hours

All community service workers must sign in and out at the beginning and end of each shift at the Main Circulation Desk.

Important Guidelines

  • The library uses its own time sheets to track hours.
  • Staff must initial the time sheets for the hours to count.
  • The library does not sign sheets from other organizations.
  • Workers receive the original copy; the library retains a digital backup.
