Celebrate the American Flag

The Mattoon Public Library will host a community celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the American flag on July 31, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the library’s Community Room (Lower Basement) at 1600 Charleston Avenue. The event is free and open to the public, with students especially encouraged to attend.

The program will begin at the library’s flagpole with the Pledge of Allegiance at 10am presented by the Exchange Club of Mattoon, followed by a series of presentations honoring the history, symbolism, and civic importance of the American flag.

Retired Army 1st Sgt. Tony Nicholson, of the Exchange Club will serve as the event’s featured speaker, offering a historical overview of the flag’s origins, evolution, and enduring role in American life. His presentation will highlight key moments in the flag’s 250‑year history and the values it represents.

The ceremony will also include a Presentation of Colors by BSA Troop 141 from Charleston, IL, demonstrating the respect and tradition associated with the flag’s formal display. The Exchange Club of Mattoon will present the Freedom Shrine, a collection of foundational American documents that reflect the nation’s democratic heritage. The Exchange Club will additionally lead the Flagpole Pledge, reinforcing the community’s shared commitment to civic ideals.

A flag giveaway will be offered to attendees as part of the celebration, providing a meaningful keepsake to commemorate the anniversary.
