About the Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Mattoon Public Library began in 1989 as an education and literary, not-for-profit organization. They are a group of individuals who believe MPL is a valuable community resource, and they support the library by helping drive our mission to provide a welcoming destination that cultivates lifelong learning and serves as a leader in civic collaboration. Today, the Friends are still working to raise funds and support our beautiful and historic library.

Friends of the Mattoon Public Library help with a variety of tasks, including:

• Holding book sales and other fundraising activities to supplement our Library
• Promoting the joy of reading through lunchtime book reviews and other activities
• Gathering to learn about new projects or to provide feedback on proposed changes

Join the Friends!

There are two types of Friends members:

• Contributing Members pay a membership due each year to support the library and benefit from the additional resources and events these contributions provide.
• Committee Members serve as officers and volunteers for committee assignments and other Friends’ projects. *If you would like to become a committee member, please specify this on the sign-up form below.

Your friendship and support are priceless. Membership as a Friend of the Mattoon Public Library will help us develop new services, organize further cultural and educational activities, and raise funds for library materials. Those interested in joining should fill out this form, or visit the Main Desk for a printed informational pamphlet.

At the Mattoon Public Library, our vision is to become the cultural pillar for discovery, community, and connection. This means that we strive to help the community, and we endeavor to provide adequate resources to help with your success and enjoyment! As an official Friend of the Mattoon Library, you will play a part in driving your library toward realizing our vision.
